Family & Children Services
In early 2001, the Adult & Child Guidance Center and Family Services Mid-Peninsular merged to become Family & Children Services. Family & Children Services now provide services to an expanded geographical area-from Santa Clara County through San Mateo County. The newly formed organization serves approximately 20,000 people.
The San Jose center remains the oldest mental health facility of its type in the South Bay, celebrating more than 50 years of service to the community. Family & Children Services offer assistance to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. It provides counseling and therapy in eight languages, including American sign language, to children as young as two years, adults and families seeking assistance for a myriad of difficulties.
More than 60% of the cases involve child abuse along with the concurrent problems of childhood depression and potential suicide. Counselors also offer support in areas such as teenage pregnancy, chemical dependency, divorce, remarriage and step-parenting, and crisis intervention. A specially designed program is in place for the hearing impaired, the only service of its kind in the greater South Bay.
Family & Children Services has been the major recipient of Valle Monte League, Inc. funds for the past 48 years. Valle Monte contributions enable them to purchase the San Jose property in 1973 and the Valle Monte Child and Family Therapy Wing in 1987. Therapeutic playground equipment installed helps therapists to observe children at play as well as in sessions.
